September 2024 - Cruising to Alaska

Exploring the Majesty of Alaska: A NCL Cruise Adventure from Seattle
Alaska—where the vast wilderness and ethereal landscapes invite you to step into a world of adventure and wonder. My first-ever journey to this enchanting state was aboard an NCL cruise in September 2024, a round trip from the vibrant city of Seattle, WA. Little did I know, the journey would leave me yearning for more of Alaska's stunning beauty.
Juneau: Nature’s Grandeur Unveiled
Our first port of call was Juneau, nestled between the Gastineau Channel and majestic mountains. As the only U.S. state capital accessible only by boat or plane, it has an alluring mix of rugged wilderness and rich history.
The highlight? A trek to the stunning Mendenhall Glacier. This awe-inspiring glacier is a spectacle, shimmering with icy blue hues that took my breath away. While walking along its paths, the sheer power and beauty of nature were on full display.
Skagway: The Gateway to the Klondike
Next, the ship sailed to Skagway—a town that seems to have slipped through time. Famous for being a gateway during the Klondike Gold Rush, Skagway exudes a unique old-world charm with its preserved wooden sidewalks and saloons echoing stories of old.
A ride on the historic White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad was an absolute must. This remarkable train journey weaves through steep mountains and lush landscapes, offering a glimpse into the intrepid spirit of miners who once sought fortune in the icy north.
Glacier Bay National Park: A Symphony of Ice and Silence
After the historical charm of Skagway, our NCL cruise sailed into the mesmerizing Glacier Bay National Park—a place where silence reigns and nature's grandeur is on full display. This protected area is home to some of the world's most magical glaciers, adding an ethereal touch to our journey.
With my cruise balcony as the perfect vantage point, I witnessed a phenomenon that spoke volumes about nature's raw power and beauty—the calving of a glacier. Watching enormous blocks of ice split and crash into the ocean, sending ripples across the bay, was a soul stirring, almost meditative experience.
In addition to this breathtaking spectacle, the park rangers onboard provided us with insightful lessons about the glaciers, sharing their knowledge of the delicate balance of this glacial ecosystem and the unique wildlife that thrives here. Their passion and stories deepened our appreciation for the wonders surrounding us.
Exploring Glacier Bay from the comfort of the ship while learning from passionate park rangers made this stop a highlight of the cruise.
Ketchikan: A Tapestry of Culture and Nature
Our adventure continued at Ketchikan, a city drenched in indigenous culture and vibrant art. Walking along the historic Creek Street—once a bustling redlight district—is like flipping through the colorful pages of history.
With each step, I learned more about the rich Tlingit heritage that thrives in Ketchikan, nestled among the soaring salmon and lush woodland backdrop.
I can’t wait to return to Alaska—each visit will reveal more of its intoxicating allure.
